The Ten Gods are relationship labels, not ten personalities

The Ten Gods are labels for the relationship between the day stem and another stem. They are not ten entities, and they are not a personality quiz. The name is historical terminology for a relational classification rule.

Start with the day master

The day stem is used as a reference point, often called the day master. For every other stem, a traditional rule asks two questions: what is the Five Element relationship, and do the yin-yang polarities match? Those two answers select one of ten labels.

For example, the same element with matching polarity is commonly called Peer; the same element with opposite polarity is Rival. An element that generates the day master's element is placed in a resource category. The labels are consequences of the rule, not observations made about the person.

Why translations vary

English translations differ across books and software. One product may call a category Direct Wealth, another Proper Wealth; one may use Officer, another Authority. The Chinese label and the derivation rule are more stable than the marketing translation.

When comparing charts, first check that the day master and stems are the same. Then check the translation key. Comparing names without comparing rules creates an illusion of disagreement.

Relationship labels are not instructions

It is tempting to turn a category into an instruction: more of one label means someone should take a particular career, relationship or financial action. That leap is not contained in the calculation. The chart only classifies a relation between symbols.

FateKline presents Ten Gods alongside the underlying stems so readers can trace the derivation. It does not convert them into recommendations, diagnoses or promises of an outcome.

Read the limits with the label

A label can be useful as a way to learn the grammar of a traditional system. It becomes misleading when it is detached from the input conditions, calendar convention, and uncertainty around an unknown birth time.

If an hour pillar is undetermined, the relationships derived from it are undetermined too. Silence is more accurate than a confident default.
