What Bazi actually computes — and what it does not
Bazi, often called Four Pillars, is a traditional system that turns a birth moment into four paired symbols. The useful first question is not whether it can forecast a life. It is what, precisely, the calculation produces — and where interpretation begins.

Four positions, not four answers
A Four Pillars chart contains year, month, day and hour pillars. Each pillar combines one heavenly stem with one earthly branch, creating a compact representation of a birth moment under a traditional calendar system. The result is structured data: eight characters, plus derived relationships such as element balance and Ten Gods.
The calculation itself is deterministic. Give the same date, local time, location rules and calendar convention to the same engine, and it should return the same pillars. That reproducibility matters. It lets a reader ask whether a disagreement came from an input, a time-zone rule, a calendar rule or an interpretation — rather than treating every result as unknowable.
Why the clock matters
The hour pillar is not a decorative extra. In this system, a two-hour block changes the branch assigned to the birth time. A clock time also needs a place: historical time-zone offsets and daylight-saving rules can change the local civil time used in the calculation.
Some practitioners also apply true solar time, a longitude correction between the clock's time-zone meridian and the sun's local position. FateKline shows this choice rather than silently applying it. If the hour is unknown, the honest result is an undetermined hour pillar. Filling it with a convenient default creates a complete-looking chart from incomplete data.
Calendar boundaries are part of the method
Traditional Four Pillars calculations commonly use solar terms for year and month boundaries. The year changes at Lichun, Start of Spring, rather than on January 1 or Lunar New Year. The month changes at designated solar terms rather than at the first day of a lunar month.
That is why two websites can disagree for someone born near a boundary. The difference may be entirely mechanical: one may compare UTC with local time, one may use a different ephemeris, or one may use a different day-boundary convention. A trustworthy product states those rules beside the output.
Calculation is not validation
A chart can be computed correctly under its rules without demonstrating that it predicts future events. These are separate claims. FateKline treats the first as an engineering problem and does not make the second claim.
Use a chart, if you use one at all, as a cultural framework for reflection. Do not use it as a basis for medical, legal, financial or safety decisions. The language around a chart should be proportionate to what was actually calculated.
